Music & Arts Lineup

Bumbershoot is more than just great music. The 38th annual three-day sensory experience is the biggest of its kind in North America—a regular mecca for art fiends and pop culture gluttons. It's hard to believe that you get all this for one dirt cheap ticket, but quit pinching yourself, because it's true!

Comedy

When we expanded our comedy program to three stages last year, we wondered if we were crazy. Apparently not—all three venues, including the new Northwest comedy stage at the Vera Project, were huge crowd favorites, each featuring the freshest comedians from around the nation and here at home. The three stages will return in 2008 with a complete comic lineup to be announced this summer.

Film

Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF) curates the 1 Reel Film Festival, typically featuring more than 100 short films within 27 special programs on varying themes. The 2008 film program will be announced in the spring.

Dance

Bumbershoot is proud to present a brand new collaboration between San Francisco-based choreographer Joe Goode and New York-based puppeteer Basil Twist. The performance, called “Wonderboy,” features a distinctive blend of dance and theatre; it debuts this summer at San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center for the Performing Arts and then travels to Bumbershoot. Also on the program are performances from the Pacific Northwest Ballet and a slate of regional and national performance companies.

Theatre / Performance

The 2008 theatre and performance lineup will be announced in the spring.

Literary Arts

This year’s Literary Arts program welcomes graphic novelists Dan Clowes and Adrian Tomine, sci-fi legend William Gibson, a special edition of Starlee Kine and Arthur Jones’ Post-It Note Reading Series, authors Nathan McCall, Francesca Lia-Block, Kevin Sessums, and more.

Visual Arts

The Visual Arts’ exhibits will showcase the Gage Academy’s Drawing Jam (giving attendees a taste of the classical art studio); “The Power of One,” a monumental photo and multimedia exhibit that explores the ways individuals make an impact in society (be it war, peace, environment, etc) curated by Marita Holdaway of Benham Gallery; a collection of local and national contemporary video work from The Henry Art Gallery (including work by performance artists Grand Openings from New York); a special “One Pot” residency and exhibit from food adventurer Michael Hebberoy; and The Seattle-Tehran Poster Show (a reprisal of last year’s hit Seattle-Havana Poster Show that’s now installed in the National Gallery in Havana).

Spectacle

The Festival’s penchant for playful performance continues with Strange Fruit, a performing arts company that hails from Melbourne, Australia, fusing theatre, dance and circus, perched atop 12-foot poles. A bit closer to home (and the ground) will be an outdoor table as part of the One Pot residency, and site-specific installations by regional artists.

Kids Programs

Bumbershoot is not just for adults! The 2008 kids programming lineup will be announced in the spring.

Flatstock

AmeThe American Poster Instituteís Flatstock returns for its sixth reigning year at Bumbershoot and historically is a haven for music and art fans alike. Poster artists from around the country convene during the Festival to display their diverse collection of rock-inspired art, and provide collectors the opportunity to meet the artists and pick up an affordable limited edition piece to take home.
